Galileo Commission / Academy for the Advancement of Postmaterialist Sciences Summit and Book Launch for
Wisdom in Science: A Necessary Dialogue
Volume VII
Postmaterialist Sciences Series
Editors: Marjorie Woollacott, David Lorimer
The volume consists of essays by scientists and academics describing their own understanding of what it means to be a wise scientist. The essays include thoughts on their own field of study, such as a neuroscientist or social scientist, through the human qualities that are critical for wisdom in science, and also the way our worldview or cosmology influences the broader wisdom we bring to science. As one of our essay writers remarked, regarding the transformation in science that our contributors envision, “A great deal of wisdom is required for such a transition to take place, as well as a lot of vigilance against the siren calls of power and ego, which will likely keep company to our humanity for still a long time to come. Ultimately, what is awaiting us on the other side of the fence? I believe that the birth of a more benign and benevolent science will inevitably be the extraordinary reward for our efforts, together with the humble recognition that whatever came before it served a sacred purpose, for us human beings to awaken our conscience to our full potential as knowing and loving species.”
