Harald will give an overview of his report, which will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Gregg Braden, Iain McGilchrist and Anne Baring, chaired by David Lorimer. We will then take questions from the audience.

Transhumanism is regarded by some as the next step in human evolution, merging with machines, but this position is contested in the report, which covers in great detail various aspects of a movement that looks more like an ideology than science as such. It is underpinned by a scientistic worldview, a topic thoroughly discussed in the original Galileo Report. This time, we are talking about the genetic and technological modification of human being, regarding by proponents as a biochemical machine. Topics include human enhancements and upgrades, various medical interventions involving gene therapy, general ethical and therapeutic considerations, transgenderism, epigenetics, the prospects for uploading the mind to overcome death, and brain-computer interfaces. On the basis of a survey of German opinion, Harald shows how transhuman discourse has already penetrated the culture.

Hence, as he writes, “it is necessary to initiate an open and critical discourse about the question to what extent we wish this transhumanist agenda, such as genetic interventions or technical implants, to dominate our research plans and draw on public funds and resources. This report is meant to give a basis to such a critical discussion.” Come and join us for what promises to be a fascinating and important discussion.
