Dr. Bruce Greyson is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He served on the full-time medical school faculty at the University of Michigan; at the University of Connecticut, where he was Clinical Chief of Psychiatry; and at the University of Virginia, where he held the endowed Chester Carlson Professorship and was Director of the Division of Perceptual Studies. He was a co-founder and President of the International Association for Near-Death Studies, and Editor of the Journal of Near-Death Studies, the only peer-reviewed academic journal devoted to near-death experiences.

A licensed physician and board-certified psychiatrist, he has been elected a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and has received national awards for his medical research.

Dr. Greyson has published more than a hundred scholarly articles about near-death experiences in peer-reviewed medical journals. He has received research grants from government agencies, from pharmaceutical companies, and from private, nonprofit research foundations. He has served on grant review boards and program planning workshops at the National Institutes of Health. He has addressed more than a hundred national and international professional conferences, including a symposium on consciousness at the United Nations and a dialogue between Western scientists and Buddhist monks in India convened by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

His research for the past four decades has focused on near-death experiences and particularly their after-effects and implications. His NDE Scale has become the gold standard for quantifying near-death experiences and has been translated into 20 languages and used in hundreds of studies worldwide. He is the co-author of the academic work Irreducible Mind: Toward a Psychology for the 21st Century, and co-editor of The Near-Death Experience: Problems, Prospects, Perspectives and of The Handbook of Near-Death Experiences: Thirty Years of Investigation. His new book. After: A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal about Life and Beyond, is his first trade book bringing his scientific research to a popular audience.
